For the third year in a row, St. Germain, Wisconsin’s Independence Day celebration kicked off with the Freedom 5k Fun Run on Sunday, July 1. The event was started in 2005 in an effort to raise money for the new Bike and Hike trail which was being developed in the community. In the first three years, $4182.00 was donatd to the town for construction and maintenance.
A check in the amount of $1500 was presented to the St. Germain Bike and Hike trail in September, representing the proceeds from the 2007 race. Money donated to the Bike Trail will be used to fund Phase II of the project, which will begin construction in spring, 2008. Participating in the presentation were Youth Volunteers Courtney Harvey, Amy Reuling and Eric Camp; Caroline Fender representing Marshfield Clinic; and Mark Hiller of the St. Germain Bike Trail Committee.
The 3.1 mile run begins in the parking lot of the St. Germain Community park. The mostly off-road trail consists of primarily flat, packed dirt and gravel trail of varying width, winding through a quiet, scenic wooded area on Town of St. Germain and Wisconsin Public Service property. The 2007 event took place on Sunday, July 1, with a record number of participants. 214 runners from 14 states, ranging in age from 5 to 73 years, crossed the finish line on a beautiful summer morning. Trophies were awarded to the top overall male and female finishers, with medals going to the top three in each of eight age categories. The fourth annual Freedom 5k is scheduled for Sunday, June 29, 2008.
